RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Function:
- Facilitates the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body
- Oxygenates blood for delivery to tissues and removes carbon dioxide
- Maintains acid-base balance through regulation of carbon dioxide levels
Components:
- Upper respiratory tract: Nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx
- Lower respiratory tract: Trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli
Mechanics of Breathing:
- Inhalation: Diaphragm contracts, chest cavity expands, air is drawn into the lungs
- Exhalation: Diaphragm relaxes, chest cavity contracts, air is expelled from the lungs
